When it comes to tea, I just cannot control over my emotions!!!
Tea is an integral part of my life and I am sure it must be to many of you. Waking up every morning to a cup of tea which we have been doing since ages, like a daily prayer which is compulsory for us to stay serene at mind. Just like the same, tea helps to wake up to our fullest, regenerates us and gives that morning boost to get out of the couch and shake the world!!!
Everyone has their own way of drinking tea, some like it strong with less milk while some like that milky tea with loads and loads of sugar. In fact, everyone has their own signature of making chai, and we never think of it in the form of a recipe. Like in the northern part of India, tea is made with less milk (it’s not compulsory though, some use more milk too) with addition of ginger and cardamom for enhancing flavor of the tea while when we move to the southern part, tea is generally made with more milk and less sugar.
There are various recipes of tea, and for me every recipe is heavenly. Today I am going to discuss with you regarding a very special tea which you must be pretty much familiar with. Before I start to speak on this special tea, let me share a small experience of this magical tea which actually made me taste it the first time.
“Winters at Jaipur can deadly at times, although I enjoy the winters but I hate falling sick in winters as it turns out really bad for me. I was in a similar unexpected situation a few years back where I unexpectedly fell sick before two days of exams. Seeing my condition my parents got worried and took me to Doctor.
After a brief examination with his stethoscope and some throat examination with a torch (I still guess often on how they do it with these tools!!!), the doctor declared that I had caught bad cold and flu. He prescribed some medicines as usual and told me to take some rest. Exams were in two days, and the biggest problem was that it was a math exam (Actually I am terrified of math).
Seeing my condition, my grandmother came to me with a hot cup of tea. She told me that this is a magical remedy and I should drink it and sleep. I couldn’t say no to her, drank the tea (it seemed tasty though) and slept. The next morning when I got up, I observed a miracle. I was well again, and ready to study for my exams. I cannot really forget that time.”
Let me introduce you to grandma’s special tea – “Peppermint Tea.”
I am very big fan of this tea, not simply because it is tasty but it really is beneficial to our health and another reason is that my grandmother’s sentiments are associated with this tea. Whenever I fell low or fall sick, a cup of peppermint tea lightens me up and cures me. You will be a fan of this tea too, you just have to try it once!!!
Let us know a bit more about this special tea…
We all are familiar with peppermint but let me give a brief introduction on this famous herb. Do you remember that small white round sweet toffee which we use to eat when we were small. Yes, you are right…That’s peppermint!!!
Peppermint is a hybrid mint, a cross between water-mint and spear-mint, indigenous to Europe and the Middle East, the plant is now widespread in cultivation in many regions of the world. It is in fact a delicious and refreshing way to boost your overall health in a number of ways due to its ability to improve digestion, reduce pain, eliminate inflammation, relax the body and mind, cure bad breath, aid in weight loss and boost the immune system. Its impact on the digestive system is considerable, and its base element of menthol is perhaps the most valuable part of its organic structure.
So many benefits!!! But there are still more to come…
Let me share one more experience with you. One of my relatives had regular gastric complaints. She was suffering from irritable bowel syndrome and had taken almost all kinds of treatment but nothing seemed to work for her. Once she came to our house and seeing me drinking peppermint tea asked one for her too. I made her one, and that was the day she loves me more than her daughter. Today, she is relived of all her gastrointestinal symptoms and is happily living her life. She regularly consumed peppermint and finally got a natural cure for her problems.
Later on when I researched I found out that, peppermint tea is a real healer for people having digestive problems. There are evidences which show that peppermint being used as far back as 10,000 years ago as a dietary supplement. It has carminative effect and saves from bloating, cramping, and stomach discomfort. In my relative’s case i.e. in irritable bowel syndrome, it reduced the associated pain of cramps, bloating, and indigestion.
One small tip – “Drink a cup of peppermint tea whenever you feel some uneasiness in stomach or if your bowel movement is not up-to the mark, as its calming effects on the intestines and smooth muscles of the digestive tract.”
Do you know that peppermint is used in aroma therapy? The primary reason for this is that it tends to relax our body and relieves mental stress. You know what if you regularly consume peppermint tea you can get rid of anxiety, mental stress and it also acts as a sleeping aid. Consume it before bed time and see the difference!!! I have had a good experience when I was unable to sleep.
One more health benefit which I want to share with you is regarding its benefits of immune system. All of you who are reading this should now read it more intensely because I am going to share with a simple trick to stay healthy, which are practiced in our Vedas and purans too. You know when you drink a cup of peppermint tea daily, it strengthens our immune system and you don’t fall sick at all. Our ancestors knew it and used this formula throughout their lives but our generation is certainly unaware of the same. There are also trace elements of vitamin B, potassium, antioxidants and calcium, which can help your body uptake nutrients to fight off illnesses and perform necessary functions to keep your body working in a healthy way.
Let us come to an exciting topic on peppermint tea. Guess what it would be??? Can you???
Let’s learn how to make it. You know what may be many of you must be aware of this recipe and hence I am going to share with my top three favorites which will set your heart on fire…
Fresh Hot Peppermint Tea
This one is the simplest form of peppermint tea which can be easily made but requires a bit of work. You must buy some leaves of peppermint (you can just freshly pluck from your garden, if you have one), and before buying the leaves please ensure that they are green and unblemished (This is a good indicator of freshness). Use your hands to crush the peppermint by rubbing the leaves in between your fingers. Crushing the peppermint helps to release the flavor and aroma of the herb. Put the leaves in a kettle and bring to a boil. Strain and enjoy your peppermint tea!!!
You can avoid all this plucking hassle just by using a peppermint tea bag. This is convenient and has a better taste than the ones made with fresh leaves as they are processed to be more pure. Try one out today only!!!
For making it more exciting, you can also add milk, honey, sugar and lemon. You know what??? I prefer to add honey to it, the flavor actually becomes irresistible as the sweetness of honey and the minty flavor of peppermint gives a good symbiotic taste to the tea. Occasionally, I add milk too, if I feeling to experiment a bit with the tea.
Iced Peppermint Tea
Although it is icy, but still a hot favorite of mine. This is also very simple to make. You just have to fill the tea pot with water and add 3-5 teabags or some peppermint leaves. Bring the tea to boil and strain the infusion. Fill up a pitcher with ice and then pour the infusion into it. If you wish, add extras like honey or lemon to the iced tea.
Special peppermint tea
This is indeed a special type of peppermint tea because here we prepare the chai and peppermint separately, and then at the last mix them together. First prepare the peppermint powder by crushing the peppermint candy canes in a coffee grinder. You can store it in an airtight container for daily use. Now prepare tea, probably a ginger tea by adding milk. When the tea is 3/4 way done, add 1/4 teaspoon of crushed candy cane, sugar (if adding), and tea masala. Stir and let it boil for a few more minutes, turn off the heat. Strain the tea in a cup.
There are many more recipes which you can make with peppermint. This tea is a real powerful tea. I have had my experiences which I shared with you and now it’s time for you to experience this magical tea and spread the word!!!
