5 Surprising Benefits of Assam Tea | Assam Tea History

Benefits of Assam Tea

Assam being one of the most beautiful states in India is known for its alluring river valleys, mountains and hills. The fact that it is surrounded by the Northern Himalayas, the Brahmaputra plains and the Deccan plateau on three sides – makes it one of the richest biodiversity zones in the world. Apparently, entire state is rich in flora and fauna making it a perfect fit to be known as the land of nature. Other than this, if we go into the history of this state, it was earlier known by the name of Pragjyotisha as found in Mahabharata. It only came to be known as Assam after the British rule came to India and included it in its territory. Along with this, came to India, the plantation of every Indian’s favorite – tea. The result of which is that, today, tea gardens throughout the range of Assam Valley are natural beauty sites. Moving further, let’s have a quick look at how Assam became famous for its tea, followed by the health benefits of Assam Tea.

Some Facts about the History of Assam Tea

Until 19th century, all tea was harvested from the Chinese tea plant, this meant that tea seeds or plants had to be transported and planted elsewhere, mainly India. Luckily, in 1823, Robert Bruce, a Scottish adventurer and failed civil servant, explored the Assam region, and discovered Assam tea plant growing wild in the hills of Upper Assam region. It was later classified as a variety of Camellia Sinensis, but had wilder leaves than the sinensis variety. In 1839, the Assam Tea Company was founded to begin production of this black tea in the Assam valley.

After that, Assam became the prime region for tea cultivation. The rich soil is fed by floods during the monsoon season (May-October), and tea is picked from April to November during the hottest and wettest season. First flush Assam tea is harvested in April, while the second flush is picked from May to June, and is most often used in black tea blends such as East Frisian or afternoon blends.

Tea harvested during Assam’s second flush is considered to have the best flavours because hot and wet growing conditions bring out the malty richness of tea. Talking about the regions of Assam, the areas surrounding Nalbari, Bongaigaon, and the state’s capital city, Guwahati, make up the Lower Assam tea-growing region. Whereas, the upper and central together produce the largest amount of the best quality tea in Assam.
Like every other type of tea, Assam tea too comes with a set of health benefits that help you move towards a hearty life. Let’s see how.

Health Benefits of Assam Tea:

Heals Tooth Cavity

In today’s era, when most of us are fond of eating too much, a sweet dish after a good meal has become mandatory. However, making this a habit may come with the negative effect of causing cavities. Once this happens, it would not only cause you pain but will also affect your nerve health. Most of us are usually aware of this situation, but we still don’t wish to give up on our habits. To keep you going with what you love to eat – Assam tea comes with a solution. Consuming Assam tea or gargling it regularly every single morning and at night before going to bed will keep you away from cavity and also help you heal fast if you already have it.

Keeps the body warm

It’s a given fact that the weather of our country is ever changing, which makes it necessary for us to keep our body warm. Whether it’s a rainy day or a chilly winter morning, a cup of Assam tea is the best way to keep our body warm. With the frequent change of weather, there is also a high possibility for us to catch cold and fever. This may slow down your everyday activities and make you want to stay in bed all day. However, you can easily get over this problem just by having a perfectly brewed warm cup of Assam tea.

Gives you healthier skin

When it comes to healthy skin, most of us use all sorts of cosmetics to keep it glowing and well hydrated. Usually, this investment leaves us with nothing more than a temporarily glowing skin and wastage of money as well as our valuable time. It is so because we fail to understand that our skin needs no external treatment but an internal one. To help you with this, we advise you to make Assam tea a part of your daily routine as it contains Vitamin A and E which are good for the skin. It will purify your blood internally, and keep you away from a lot of skin problems.

Cognitive Function

It has been scientifically proven that Assam tea can help improve mental alertness, and with the notable levels of antioxidants and caffeine it can also prevent oxidative stress in the brain, which can reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. However, it is advisable not to consume it more than three times a day.

Fight Infections and Inflammation

The mineral and antioxidant content of Assam tea may help boost your immune system, and may help relieve or even prevent disease. So, as soon as you feel the first symptom of the common cold or fever hitting you, bundle up and make yourself a hot cup of Assam tea, sweetened with honey that will help you speed up healing and spend less time sick in bed.

Other than these, there are several other health benefits of this tea like – it keeps you away from heart diseases and cancer, and increases your metabolism. Above all this, just a simple cup of Assam tea is enough to fill you with the freshness of the beautiful cold mornings of Assam. So, go grab your healthy cup of earthy freshness.
